Meet your Irmo Neighbor: Katy Wiggs

Introducing Katy Wiggs, the visionary behind SC Career Kids, a nonprofit born amidst the upheaval of the 2020 pandemic. When traditional schooling was temporarily halted, Katy, an early childhood educator, saw an opportunity to instill innovative thinking in her own children. Determined to turn adversity into opportunity, she aimed to empower children to effect positive change in their world.

Teaming up with the Greater Irmo Chamber of Commerce, Katy enlisted the expertise of a certified teacher, an assistant, and a handful of eager young minds. Together, they transformed a room within the chamber office into a dynamic one-room schoolhouse. Here, local community leaders and business owners engaged with the children, sharing insights about their careers.

At the heart of SC Career Kids (SCCK) is a mission to ignite career exploration at a crucial developmental stage. By exposing South Carolina's youth to the wealth of opportunities within the state, SCCK aims to cultivate future leaders and workforce talent, thereby bolstering the state's economic prospects.

SCCK's initiatives include the Irmo Elementary School Career Club, the upcoming Saxe Gotha Elementary School Career Club, the SCCK Career Camp, and the forthcoming Safety Town program hosted at Union United Methodist Church.

In the past year, 125 students in grades K-5 have participated in career clubs, while 35 students have attended career camps. Over 100 career experts have generously volunteered their time to educate and inspire the next generation, fostering crucial skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.

Together, SC Career Kids and its dedicated supporters are sowing the seeds of awareness and enthusiasm for the myriad possibilities that lie ahead, nurturing the growth and development of young minds for a brighter tomorrow.
